There was a project called OpenMosix which did exactly what you want(ed) on Linux! (Maybe you didn’t notice). I think there where even Live-CDs with whom you could try it very easily. Sadly, the original project has stopped.
But there is a fork, at least there are some people trying to update the functionality for kernel 2.6.

The trick is, this will have to be easy/automatic to setup. It won’t get used much if it isn’t.

Well, it does seem like the more-than-one-computer-in-the-home crowd is growing like a weed. And by the time anything like this is actually released, we’ll be talking about the times when home bathrooms didn’t have computers.
